Did you know the lights in your home or office could be harming your health and the environment?
Fluorescent lights contain mercury, a hazardous neurotoxin. Every year, millions of fluorescent lamps end up in landfills, leaking toxic mercury into our air and water. The World Health Organization lists mercury in the top ten most problematic chemicals.
The National Stewardship Action Council set a new standard for clean lighting by sponsoring and passing AB 2208 (Asm. Kalra & Sen. Becker) in 2022, a law that phases out mercury-containing fluorescent lamps across California.
Unlike fluorescents, Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) don't contain dangerous mercury, use half the amount of electricity to produce the same amount of light, and last 2-3 times longer!
Join us in accelerating the transition to clean, energy-efficient LED lighting and ensuring a safer, more sustainable future.
Through policy-driven action and public engagement, we are leading the charge to eliminate toxic lighting and replace it with safer, more efficient alternatives.
Fluorescent lamps leak mercury into the environment when broken or improperly disposed of, leading to severe health risks. Lighting our homes and businesses shouldn’t mean risking our health.

Mercury contaminates municipal waste streams, polluting soil and water
As part of NSAC’s mission to achieve a responsible, circular economy, SafeLighting.us collaborates with businesses, property owners, and communities to identify outdated lighting, educate stakeholders, and provide solutions for an easy transition to LEDs.
Switching to LEDs has never been easier—or more affordable. Thanks to our partnership with NRG Incentives, businesses and property owners can access financial incentives, grants, and rebates to offset the cost of upgrading to energy-efficient lighting.
